Raahe Jazz on the Beach presents the best of European music with its nicely balanced program
For the 26th time, Raahen Rantajatsit a.k.a Raahe Jazz on the Beach serves up Finnish and European high quality music in the seaside scenery in Raahe. The international headliner is the fast emerging saxophonist-composer Marius Neset with the big Norwegian Trondheim Jazz Orchestra.
Raahe Jazz on the Beach holds on to its profile and quality by featuring the most interesting music makers of the season. The festival will be opened on Thursday 24 July by HERD, a trio of vibraphone, double bass and drums. Over a few years, the trio led by vibraphonist Panu Savolainen has emerged as one of the most esteemed jazz groups in Finland. The trio that charms audiences with their fresh sound has been awarded first prize at the prestigious European Jazz Competition. HERD has also hosted their own popular HERD club at the Finnish National Theatre’s ‘Lavaklubi’.
Iiro Rantala is undoubtedly the most successful Finnish jazz musician internationally. Iiro will play his solo piano set in Raahe. The virtuoso records for ACT record company, and his ‘Lost Heroes’ solo piano album has been awarded in many ways since its publication a couple of years ago.
Marius Neset, a talent in his thirties, is a hot name at this season’s festivals. In April Jazz Neset performed with his band Birds but in Raahe he will be playing with the big Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Their collaboration album ‘Lion’ was released in April and it has raised a great deal of interest both among media and the audience.
Jazzbasilli, the fresh collaboration project of the successful HERD and versatile vocalist Aili Ikonen, dives into the golden era of Finnish jazz schlager. Their set includes e.g. updated versions of hits made known by Laila Kinnunen, the legendary singer whose popularity was at its peak in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, but with absolute respect to the originals. The highly acclaimed concept brings evergreens like ‘Pojat’, ‘Valoa Ikkunassa’ and ‘Suklaasydän’ to modern day. It’ll be interesting to hear what our leading jazz musicians make out of those classics.
Rakka, a quintet that is on a steady upswing especially on the German market, brings to Raahe material from its acclaimed new album’ Mykorritsan Valtakunta’.
Jazz on the Beach pays homage to the 78-year-old legendary saxophonist Juhani Aaltonen, who performs both with his quartet and solo in the beautiful church of Raahe. Alongside maestro Aaltonen will be Iro Haarla on piano, Reiska Laine on drums and Ulf Krokfors on double bass.
Black Motor, the Tampere-based power trio with something of a cult following, will perform in Raahe with two guest soloists: Sakari Kukko, the front figure of the band Piirpauke, and P-K Keränen of 22-Pistepirkko will guarantee an eventful evening with free jazz and alternative rock.
Two Finnish musicians who are well-known on the stages of Europe, Jimi Tenor and Kalle Kalima, have teamed up as a trio called Tenors of Kalma. There is going to be Jimi Tenor’s original music with shades of progressive rock and African rhythms.
As usual, Jazz on the Beach will feature free events and a children’s picnic concert.
