Top jazz in village fete style – a joyous Raahe Jazz on the Beach festival is approaching

The American saxophone legend Dave Liebman, Marc Ducret and trumpeter Verneri Pohjola are stars of the Jazz on the Beach festival on the last weekend of July. The program includes Finnish and international top groups on the crest of the new jazz wave.

One of the most interesting live acts of the year is brought to Raahe by pianist Aki Rissanen’s and drummer Jussi Lehtonen’s quartet featuring Dave Liebman on saxophone. Raahe Jazz on the Beach is the only festival in Finland this year where you can hear this band. The quartet, reinforced by Jori Huhtala on bass, provides a tasty sample of current Finnish jazz mastery. The concert also climaxes the long-standing co-operation between the 68-year-old Liebman and Finnish jazz musicians. Dave Liebman became known by the general jazz public in the 70s when he played in the bands of jazz giants like Miles Davis, Chick Corea and Elvin Jones.

The revamped Verneri Pohjola Quartet features Verneri himself, pianist Aki Rissanen, bass player Antti Lötjönen and drummer Teppo Mäkynen. The joy and spontaneity between the four musicians can be heard both on the recently released and highly acclaimed Bullhorn album and in their captivating live act. Verneri Pohjola’s music is varied, sometimes tranquil, sometimes pompous and energetic, and it touches the Finnish soul.

Another hot Finnish name is the Helsinki-based sextet Dalindèo, which is led by Valtteri Pöyhönen. He is also known as the leader of Ricky-Tick Big Band, which charmed the Jazz on the Beach audience two years ago. Dalindèo has become known as a forerunner in terms of style and as a barrier-breaking live performer who also respects tradition. Dalindèo is known for its danceable groove and strong melodies that combine swing seamlessly with surf, Latin rhythms, Finnish schlager and guitar instrumentals. Their latest album, Kallio, has just been released worldwide.

World-class guitarist Marc Ducret plays at Jazz on the Beach both in a solo concert and together with the Journal Intime horn players. The self-taught French virtuoso’s career continues at full strength. We’ve heard Ducret at Jazz on the Beach before in 2009 when he played a concert with his trio that has been active since 1996 (Bruno Chevillon on bass and Eric Echampard on drums). This summer we will hear his new solo material.

The new Jazz on the Beach festival director Charles Gil has prepared a menu that includes two other French groups in addition to Ducret. Mediums, the trio of the cello virtuoso Vincent Courtois and the saxophonists Daniel Erdmann and Robin Fincker familiar from Das Kapital, is an original group where you can hear the charismatic players’ personality come through the music. The impressive and acclaimed Mediums is at home with ethnic music styles, pop influences, modern concert music and experimental jazz.

Journal Intime, a brass band of three players, promises to take Jimi Hendrix’ s music to a whole new level with their Lips on Fire set. The seamless team of Fred Gastard on baritone sax, Matthias Mahler on trombone and Sylvain Bardiau on trumpet bursts with energy and skill. Journal Intime performs three different sets at Jazz on the Beach: first there is Jimi Hendrix, then a children’s concert, and lastly the Finnish premiere of material they play together with Ducret.

The Nordic ingredient on the menu comes from Sweden. Lina Nyberg is known for her innovative and improvisatory style that has been described as jazz poetry. The internationally appreciated singer has just released her 16th solo album. The Lina Nyberg band at Jazz on the Beach features David Stackenäs on guitar, Josef Kallerdahl on bass and Peter Danemo on drums.

The Raahe Jazz on the Beach program traditionally includes free of charge events, local performers, a family picnic and jam session packed with surprises.
